Wednesday, April 8th, 2009In 1997, Hollywood Records released the various artist compilation album, Lounge-a-palooza. This album featured lounge covers (and a few original songs). I fell in love with the lounge style of music in the late 90’s, I didn’t discover this album until I stumbled upon it at the library early 2001. Recently I purchased a copy of this great lounge album from my favorite local music store in East Lansing, Flat Black and Ciricular.
Lounge-A-Palooza
The first song I noticed on the album, and the reason I picked it up back in 2001 was because it featured a song by Poe. A Rose is a Rose was written by Poe’s brother Mark Z Danielewski. From the start, this track sounds like it is recorded on vinyl with static. Poe sings this swanky track with classic sounding music, including horns, bass and drums. It sounds like it could have come straight out of the 1930-1940’s.
Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé’s cover of Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun is hauntingly beautiful. Who would have thought of this song as being a lounge hit? This was the most surprising track on the whole album.
Other note worthy tracks include, Fastball’s cover of This Guy’s in Love with You, Ben Folds Five’s cover of She don’t use Jelly, Pizzicato Five’s cover of The Girl From Ipanema, Fun Lovin’ Criminals cover of I’m Not in Love, and Combustible Edison & Esquivel!’s original track Miniskirt.
