Monday, January 19th, 20092007 Chaka Khan released Funk This. Produced by former Janet Jackson producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, this funky album is as true to it’s funk roots as it is to Miss Khan’s soulful sound.

This collection of cover songs and original material is a fun, emotional package of funky soulful jams. The album opens with Back in the day, starts speaking gowning up fast in Chi town, looking back in the day.
Foolish Heart, recorded originally by Dee Dee Warwick, the younger sister of Dionne Warwick. Khan brings to the track her larger than life, strong voice.
One for all Time, wishing she could go back in time and have her “one” for all time.
Angel, a troubled little angel with an inconsistent flight plan most of the time, we’ve all known angels like that at some time.
The track Will You Love Me, musically is funky. Khan’s vocals start out soft and sultry before blowing up into the strong voice she is known for.
Castles Made of Sand, Khan covers Jimi Hendrix, the track has less guitar than Hendrix’s version, but it has the soulful voice that is Chaka Khan so it is ultimately a good mix.
Disrespectful, the Queen of Funk Soul shares this track with the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. Could one ask for more than to have two legendary soul voices sharing a track. This track reached #1 U.S. dance charts.
Sign ‘O’ The Times, is a tribute to Prince, Khan’s cover of the title track of Prince’s double disc masterpiece Sign ‘O’ The Times is as much a classic as the original version.
Packed My Bags/You Got The Love, Khan covers Rufus. Ladies’ Man she covers Joni Mitchell. You Belong to Me, cover of a Doobie Brothers song, features Michael McDonald.
Hail to the Wrong and Super Life close out the album, bringing more funk and soul to the close of the album.
Miss Khan has been pleasing ears for decades and I am always glad to see her release something new. I hope Funk This is not her last release, only time will tell.
